“Tamiz Shahar” JSC continues its regular collaboration between educational entities within the framework of public awareness campaigns. “Tamiz Shahar” JSC together with ADA University located special garbage boxes in the Azerbaijan State University of Economy.
Faig Mammadov, head of Project Management department of “Tamiz Shahar” JSC delivered a lecture to the students of the University about “Municipal solid waste management”. The students were informed that 200 thousand tons of waste is segregated in the Balakhani Material recovery Facility every year. Recyclable materials like polyethylene, paper, PET bottles, plastic and so on are segregated from the total mass and sent to the recycling companies for further production. Recycling process helps to prevent environmental problems due to the fact that non-organic waste remains in the soil for a long period of time and decomposes after hundreds of years.
Faig Mammadov informed the students about Baku Waste to Energy Plant which is considered the biggest Waste-to-Energy Plant in Eastern Europe and CIS countries for its production capacity. The plant was constructed using 4G technologies and completely complies with local and European standards of environmental protection. Fly ash generated during the incineration process is caught by the special filters and does not pollute the environment. Concerning the bottom ash which is heavier and less harmful could be utilized as a construction material for road construction. It was noted that the annual incineration capacity of the plant is 500 thousand tons of waste. The volume of the waste is decreased 10 times and electricity is produced during incineration process. Last year 183 million kWt/hour of electricity was produced in the plant and after providing electricity demand of the plant, the rest of 155 million kWt/hour of electricity was sent for public use. It means that it is possible to cover annual electricity need of city or town with 300 thousand people with annual produced electricity of this plant.
After the lecture sorting boxes were located in the university with the participation of students. One of the boxes is intended for paper waste and another for glass and PET bottles.
