The World Bank and the Ministry of Economical Development held a launch workshop

World Bank and the Ministry of Economic Development of the Republic of Azerbaijan held a launch workshop dedicated to the start of the “Integrated Solid Waste Management” Project. Due to this project, an agreement on financing has been signed between the Minister of Economic Development Mr. Sahin Mustafayev and Mr. Gregori Yedrjeychak, the representative of World Bank on the Republic of Azerbaijan. The purpose of this project are to formulate potential of newly established “Tamiz Shahar” JSC, to improve the management of the existing official solid municipal waste landfills, closure of non-official landfills, etc. Within the framework of the project, 5 under served districts of Baku city are supposed to be purchased the equipment for collection and transportation of solid municipal waste.

The total cost of this project is 41,5 million USD. 29,5 million USD out of this amount is the investment of International Reconstruction and Development Bank (World Bank) and 12 million USD is the share of Azerbaijani Government in this project. The project consists of 5 components. Within the framework of the first component, there will be institutional reforms, a capacity building of “Tamiz Shahar” JSC that has been formed on the purpose of management of utilization of solid municipal waste and project management. The second component consists of improvement of management as well as rehabilitation of Balakhani landfill. Third one considers the closure of non-official landfills and/or rehabilitation of them. Within the framework of fourth component the equipments will be supplied for the collection and transportation solid municipal waste. The fifth component covers the strategic planning for the period after the completion of the project.
